Highlights: Apple tipped to use three OLED panels in 2020 iPhones. There is no confirmation on the display provider. In 2019, Apple is tipped to ship 180-190 million iPhones. We have already seen a lot of leaks about the iPhone that Apple will launch this year, but a report confirms some previously leaked details of the upcoming iPhone expected in 2019. Digitimes reports that Apple is planning to launch three iPhones in 2020 with OLED displays in 5.42-inch, 6.06-inch and 6.67-inch sizes. Citing sources from Taiwan's handset component supply chain, the publication says that there is no clarity on the display provider. The 5.42-inch model is said to release with either Samsung Display's Y-Octa or LG Display's TOE touch technology, the sources were cited as saying. They also said that both touch solutions are said to cut the display cost. Y-Octa is a flexible AMOLED display technology that removes the film substrate and allows the touch circuit to be directly patterned on the film's encapsulation layer, making the display thinner, the sources said. “Judging from technology ability, Samsung Display is likely to remain the primary OLED panel supplier of Apple in 2020, and it remains to be seen whether LG Display or BOE Technology can obtain OLED panel orders from Apple,” the sources were quoted as saying. On the 2019 models, the report said that Apple will not change its strategy and will incorporate the same display technology and sizes as the current generation, that is, two OLEDs in 5.8-inch and 6.5-inch sizes and one 6.1-inch LCD panel. Apple recently announced that it has already started assembling the iPhone 7 in India. The company said that Taiwan-based Wistron, which has its facility in Bengaluru, will now assemble the iPhone 7 alongside the iPhone 6s. Foxconn, the other iPhone manufacturer, is reportedly starting the trial production of the latest iPhones in India. Citing industry sources, Bloomberg reported that the trial run of the iPhone X range of devices will come before Foxconn starts full-scale assembly at its factory in Chennai. “Seen from Cupertino the India market looks minuscule so Apple’s strategy has been myopic. They haven’t capitalized on the ground potential - India will cross half-billion smartphone users this year,” Neil Shah, Research Director at Counterpoint Research, was quoted as saying. In January-February 2019, Apple shipped about 150,000 devices in India and is likely to see about a 50 percent drop in the March quarter from the year earlier, according to Shah. With regard to iPhone sales in 2019, the Digitimes sources estimated that the Cupertino-based giant is likely to ship 80-82 million iPhones in the first half of 2019, and nearly 180-190 million units in the whole year globally.
