The K20 Pro is the latest Redmi phone with a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor, but now it seems that the Chinese company is looking to up the ante in the camera technology it uses in its phones. Famous tipster Ice Universe has claimed that Redmi may be developing a phone with a 64MP camera sensor which Samsung launched in May this year. It is the same sensor that will reportedly debut with the rumoured Samsung Galaxy A70s smartphone. Apart from this, the tipster hasn’t revealed any other information about the mysterious Redmi phone.

The news doesn’t come as a surprise because, for long, OEMs have been focussing on enhancing camera technology on smartphones. Not only are they are incorporating more pixels into sensors, but also increasing their size. The 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor has a half-inch sensor. In addition to the large sensor sizes, companies are also introducing technologies on the pixel level. For example, Huawei introduced a sensor with Red, Yellow, Yellow and Blue (RYYB) pixels in P30 Pro. The company claimed that unlike the traditional sensors that have RGBG Bayer filter, its SuperSpectrum Sensor with RYYB filter lets in 40 percent more light and yields a high maximum ISO rating of 204,800 and 409,600 on the phone. Additionally, the companies are also using artificial intelligence (AI)-powered software optimisations to enhance the image output.

Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor

As mentioned, Samsung Semi Conductors announced the Bright GW1 sensor in May. It has a resolution of 64 megapixels and uses Samsung’s ISOCELL tech. The sensor uses tetracell technology which basically uses a method of binning 4-pixels to yield 16MP binned images. The ISOCELL Bright GW1 sensor features the highest resolution in Samsung’s 0.8μm-pixel image sensor lineup.
