Huawei is still “optimizing/perfecting” the Mate X foldable phone and it cannot go public without meeting the quality requirements, He Gang, President, Huawei’s consumer business mobile phone product line, said. The executive said that the device was still in the process of optimisation because it involves new processes and new design methods, adding that the challenges that the company is facing are greater than what it envisaged. “Everyone should be very clear that Huawei’s quality requirements are very demanding. If it does not meet the quality requirements, we will not let the products go on the market,” Gang was quoted as saying.

The report comes at a time when several media reports have said that Samsung’s foldable phone, the Galaxy Fold, is ready to hit the market. Samsung announced that it had made improvements in the foldable phone’s design and was now ready to ship it again to users. The price of the phone will remain the same as before in the US. It will retail for $1,980 (roughly Rs 1,36,000) and it will be up for purchase from September. The company even detailed what improvements it made to plug the faults.

To improve the design, the protective layer on top of the flexible display is now extended beyond the bezel so that it’s more apparent that it’s an integral part of the device. Furthermore, there are now new reinforcements to protect the screen from external particles. The top and bottom edge of the hinge now have added protection caps and there’s an additional layer of metal underneath the display while the space between the hinge and body has also been reduced. Samsung’s spokespersons in the Czech Republic and Slovakia also said that the Galaxy Fold had successfully passed all the necessary durability tests.

The Galaxy Fold was reportedly undergoing a redesign after early review units of the phone malfunctioned because of issues with a protective film on the screen. Samsung had to recall the review units. Since then, the launch of the Galaxy Fold has been postponed several times. Samsung Display Vice President Kim Seong-cheol revealed that the company had resolved “most” of the issues related to the Galaxy Fold phone, and that the device was ready for launch. “Most of the display problems have been ironed out, and the Galaxy Fold is ready to hit the market,” he said. Samsung Display, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics, is the main supplier of the folding screen.
