The wait for Reliance Jio’s high-speed home broadband, entertainment and smart home Internet of Things (IoT) solution could soon be over as the company may announce its GigaFiber service at Reliance Industries’ (RIL’s) annual general meeting (AGM) on August 12. “The commercial launch of fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) services is likely to be announced during the company’s AGM next month,” The Hindu quoted a source in the know of the development, as saying. The publisher says that a senior RIL official neither confirmed nor denied the development.
“Wireline network connectivity in India continues to remain underserved. Jio is working towards serving the need for better connectivity with its GigaFiber services. Jio, with its FTTH services, has set a target of connecting 50 million homes across the country,” Mukesh Ambani, chairman, RIL, had said in a letter to shareholders. What’s noteworthy is that RIL had acquired 51.34 percent shares in Hathway and 58.92 percent stake in Den Networks last year, likely to meet its goal of providing the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service.
Mukesh Ambani, Reliance Industries Chairman, had first announced the Jio GigaFiber service last year at the company's annual general meeting. The registrations started on August 15 last year. The company has already announced that the service would be made available simultaneously in 1,100 cities across India, but it recently updated the number of cities to 1,600. In the areas where the Jio GigaFiber service is already present, the company offers 100GB free data at 100Mbps speeds for a month.
The company has already been dropping hints about its FTTH service. Recently, Reliance Jio asked its users to name its FTTH service, which was rumoured to launch country-wide in the next three months. According to several reports, the company asked its users to pick one of the following names: JioFiber, JioHome or Jio GigaFiber. Jio apparently sent a notification to its users on the MyJio app.
