Twitter first introduced dark mode on the Android app way back in 2016. Since then, there have been no major updates in the colour contrast of the app. However, VP of Design and Research at Twitter revealed in July this year that Twitter is working on a new ‘Lights out mode’ for Android and that it will ship by mid-September. Now, the new dark mode has been spotted on the alpha version of the Twitter Android app. It is basically like Instagram’s take on dark mode.
Spotted by AndroidPolice, the new Lights Out mode contains a third element under the display head. The new element lets users pick the dark mode appearance between two options - dim and lights out. While ‘dim’ refers to Twitter’s existing dark mode in the stable app, the ‘lights out’ mode is new. Lights out mode lets users switch the interface to a true-black tone. It is likely to help curb power consumption on phones with OLED displays.
The Lights out mode was first announced in March. Despite that, the new dark mode is still limited to Twitter’s alpha app for Android. It is available to a small group of people, invite-only group of testers. It is still left to come to the beta version before rolling out to the stable version.
As of now, Light Out mode is showing up in version 8.19.0 of the alpha version of Twitter’s Android app. The version is not yet available on APK Mirror. If you want, you can request to join the alpha, which is invite-only here.
