Ever find yourself with a song stuck in your head and you don't remember the name of the song or the lyrics correctly? Well, worry not because it looks like Google can help you in this case. At Search On, Google has announced that a user can search for a song by simply humming or whistling the tune. No lyrics, artist name or perfect pitch required.

How to search for a song on Google by humming or whistling

Starting today, users will be able to hum, whistle or sing a melody to Google to identify the song stuck in their head. To begin with, ensure you have updated the Google app on your smartphone. Just so you know, this feature is currently available in English on iOS, and in more than 20 languages on Android.

Open the latest version of the Google app  Tap the mic icon and say “what's this song?” or click the “Search a song” button.  Then start humming for 10-15 seconds.

On Google Assistant, it’s just as simple. Say “Hey Google, what’s this song?” and then hum the tune.

After you’re finished humming, Google’s machine learning algorithm helps identify potential song matches. It also shows you a percentage next to the results, corresponding to how likely it is the song you were humming.

This isn’t the first time Google has helped users identify a song using the Google Assistant. If you are listening to a song on the radio or it appears in a movie, you could always call on the Assistant to listen to the song and it would most often get the song right.

There have been a number of apps that help a user identify a song. An app like Shazam listens to you sing, or hum the tune of a song and identifies the song as well.
