It’s time to share a long birthday post for a friend on social media, and you know just the right images to pick. The problem is, those shots are buried under a mountain of selfies, memes, vacation photos and image-based content, and searching for the same will take you the better part of an hour. Well, this might not be the case anymore with Google Photos testing out a new search functionality that might even replace lens. The feature lets you look for people by simply searching for them by entering relevant text in the search bar.

New Google Photos feature: How does it work?

A few users have reported that they can no longer see the Google Lens button that once appeared on Google Photos. Instead, they can see a search shortcut that looks like any other search icon. You can use this to search for images that have certain people’s faces in them and then scroll through the results to locate the right ones.

For instance, if Priya is looking for photographs of Rahul, she simply needs to select the search shortcut and then tap his face to find relevant images. Google Photos results are typically displayed by the year, so once the right images pop up, you just need to scroll to the right year and locate the photo you desire.

While the functionality itself is not new (you could always select the three dots at the top corner of the image and search for photographs with the same faces), the accessibility to the functionality is new. Tapping the face lets you conduct a reverse search.

When will this feature rollout?

As of now, the feature seems to be in a testing phase, with only a few users being able to access it. However, based on the same, we can estimate that it will roll out to the masses soon.
