With an Artificial Intelligence (AI) boom, India is expected to play a pivotal role in influencing regulation. And recently Brad Smith, Microsoft's Vice Chair and President, unveiled a five-point blueprint for governing AI in India, spotlighting transparency and safety. Micorosoft’s President and Vice Chair recently wrote a 5-point blueprint for India to govern AI. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the same. This was further retweeted by CEO Satya Nadella. He emphasised on responsible AI deployment for both India and the world.

Here’s Brad Smith’s 5-point blueprint for India:

1.The blueprint suggests that one should adopt and enhance safety frameworks led by governments to ensure AI aligns with safety standards.

2. AI is now controlling critical systems. Hence, Smith’s blueprint advocates for enforced safety mechanisms to ensure reliability.

3. Smith further proposes a legal structure rooted in AI's architecture, adapting to AI's intricate advancements.

4. Next, the blueprint promotes transparency and access to AI systems for academics and the public,in turn gaining trust.

5. Lastly, Smith stresses that collaboration is the key to tackling AI's societal challenges; the blueprint recommends partnerships for effective solutions.

Why an AI blueprint for India?

India currently houses the G20 Presidency and Chair of the Global Partnership on AI. Hence, India's role in shaping AI governance is magnified. Further, India’s strategic position in the Quad as well as the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, strengthens its influence on responsible AI development.
